Interview with Nombuso
About Nombuso study abroad project
What do you want to study and why?
I want to study a Bachelor of Social Sciences in Political sciences and law. I love having a global perspective about the world we live in and find means of developing what’s already there to something great.
I enjoy giving back and helping people around me who cannot afford the services that they need and so I am going to give those people hope and a possibility.
Where are you from and where do you want to go?
I am from South Africa, Durban.
I love our ubuntu principal and how despite one having a bad day, we find someone or something that will inspire and motivate us. Even in poverty, we can still be happy with the little that we get and how we support one another.
I want to go to Europe, I am looking for development, enrichment, knowledge and I want to be a story for the youth of South Africa. By showing them that nothing is impossible for as long as you have a dream and that if you find your purpose, the sky is the limit.
A lot of people instill their fears onto others but never let naysayers get to you. If I can do it despite all the challenges I had to go through, then the next person too can achieve the very same and more if they persevere and are determined for success no matter how long it takes. Because it’s not about how you start but how you finish.
Nombuso is currently working as a English teacher in China to save money for her studies. She was a student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Political science and legal studies. If you are a University registered on HigherEdMe you cand directly find her here.
Tell us more about you
What do you enjoy doing when you have spare time?
If I am not out on the streets meeting new people and networking. I love to listen to music, read a book, watch movies and series, read my bible, sleep. I love to shop but only when it’s necessary.
I don’t like to waste money on things I won’t need. I love my own space because I get to hear myself think and always trying to find a way to improve on myself, so that I can be a better person to whoever I meet and communicate with, so that even though the person I meet forgets my name but the words I have shared with them stay with them.
Is there a personality trait about you that you are proud of?
I don’t know what to call it but I always find the good in a person, especially people who look down upon themselves. I motivate them by sharing my story and letting them know that my story is no better than the next person. I am proud of the fact I never ket my background determine my life and how I’m going to live. Instead, my background is my motivation, because I know it’s not where I come from, but where I’m going that matters.
Where I am now, I never imagined I would be, but I am content and grabbing every opportunity by its horns.
A message for the higher education institutions
If there is anything you’d like to say to Universities who will see your profile?
I am a 23-year-old female from South Africa.
Being a young African girl is really hard because we are sometimes boxed into what ‘society thinks’ a black girl/boy should be and people see us no better than our backgrounds.
I am one person who never allowed herself to be boxed or labeled. If people labeled me, so they think, it never has affected my goal and I am still reaching for the stars.
I am a person who, when I do something, I don’t do it for recognition. I love being in the background cheering. I am a selfless person who cares about another person well being more than my own.
When growing up, my parents used to always say: “share with the next person”. We weren’t rich but we had all we needed and there was so much love because we value each other and that’s who I am.
I value life, its challenges, failures, and successes. It’s never easy but how you come out of that situation is what matters, either you come out strong or you feel pity for yourself and sulk or you go out there and knock on doors until one opens.
I know that many universities/colleges don’t accept international students going to the third year but only take going to the second year mostly but I have hope and if it means I do the second year that’s alright with me.
In life we have to make sacrifices and tough decisions but if those decisions show a better life and future one takes it even if it means taking a step back a little.
I will not let anything pull me down. Any opportunity given I am using it to the best of my ability.
If you can go abroad with a friend?
Amanda. We have two different stories and I love this because it brings awareness to others as well that you may have everything but then life has something different planned out for you.
When her mother passed away that’s when everything just tumbled down and when your family pretty much just doesn’t care then who else can you turn too?
Well, I have always been there and at times I would cry and pray God please give me enough money so I can send her to college and be that pillar of strength and be the light in her life that will open her eyes so that she could see the beauty of the world and find her purpose.
I know studying abroad is expensive but there are universities/colleges that have funding so that could be one option. There is always a window/door that will open.
She has been through a lot but I have never left her side. We are sisters and have grown so close that we share almost everything. She always says I wish I was you, look at you and I always tell her it’s all about timing. I didn’t get to where I am in a click of a finger. I had to go through a lot of challenges but I just never gave up. Your time too will come.
We always fantasized about studying or working abroad from childhood and so if an opportunity presented itself I would sure take her along so we can fulfil our dream together in our different study fields.
To have her there and sharing all the good and bad times together would be a dream come true. When the people you thought loved you no longer care one goes to a dark place, but I have always made her believe in herself and know that she’s smart and capable.
I don’t have all the money in the world but she knows if she wants something I got her back and I wouldn’t change that for anybody. At the end of the day, it’s all about how one finishes.
In a race you have people giving up in the middle of the race but even if you come out last you did it, although you may not get any prize for it for you it means something and those are the mindsets and generation we want to have in our world.
Where even though it seems impossible it’s always possible. We all have a story but the end of the story is what’s important.
